After the Screaming Stops

This 2018 documentary, directed by Joe Pearlman and David Soutar, follows Matt and Luke Goss, the twin brothers of the eighties British pop group Bros, as they prepare for a 2017 reunion concert in London. In their youth the band was big enough to fill Wembley; then it broke up, Luke moved into acting in Hollywood and Matt began performing in Las Vegas. The film's reputation comes from the sentences the brothers produce in front of the camera. Certain lines said between rehearsals took on a life of their own online, and the film was for a while remembered as accidental comedy. But Pearlman and Soutar did more than collect quotable material: the way the two men are both dependent on and wounded by each other becomes less funny and more familiar as the rehearsals go on. It won the BAFTA in the documentary category and runs ninety-seven minutes. There is plenty of backstage material and comparatively little of the concert itself; the real subject is the tension of getting there. Who it's for: people who like music documentaries and want to see the real sibling story behind a much-mocked film. Who it's not for: anyone expecting a concert film centred on the Bros catalogue; the songs stay in the background here.
