Alice

Alice has a happy life: her husband, a small son, a good flat in Paris. Then one day her bank card is declined and the whole thing comes apart. Her husband has been paying escorts for years, has spent everything they had, and has disappeared. Alice is left with a child and nothing. To make the rent she goes into the same work herself and finds herself inside a world she knew nothing about. Josephine Mackerras's first feature won the top narrative prize at SXSW in 2019, with Emilie Piponnier as Alice. The film neither supplies a man to rescue her nor punishes her; it watches Alice make her own decisions.
