What Alison Is About
In 1994 Alison Botha was abducted outside her home in South Africa by two men, left for dead at the edge of a nature reserve, and survived. Uga Carlini’s documentary does not dwell on the detail of the attack; it is about what came after. Botha’s own voice carries the film alongside dramatised passages, with Christia Visser as the younger Alison while Botha herself sits before the camera and builds the account in her own words. She went on to speak in more than thirty countries, among the first women in South Africa to do so openly, and made it easier for others to speak too.
