What Alive and Kicking Is About
The documentary goes inside today’s swing dance world: the competitors who fly to the other side of the planet to find a partner, the halls, the teachers and the community’s own rules, all seen from close up. Susan Glatzer, who wrote and directed the film and produced it herself, traces the line from the dance’s birth in Harlem as the Lindy Hop to its revival in the 1990s, and in doing so describes not a pastime but a space where people keep touching and meeting one another, with testimony from the dance’s first generation included. The eighty eight minute American production screened at South by Southwest on 14 March 2016 and went into digital distribution in 2017.
