Alois Nebel

1989, Czechoslovakia. Alois Nebel is the dispatcher at a small station on the Polish border. He has no time for people and prefers reading old timetables. When the fog comes down something happens: he sees the trains of the last hundred years. On those trains are the Germans driven out of the region at the end of the war. He cannot shake them and ends up in a sanatorium. There he meets a mute man carrying an old photograph, arrested crossing the border. Who that man is takes Nebel back into his own past. Tomáš Luňák directs the Czech animation; eighty-four minutes, adapted from the graphic novel by Jaroslav Rudiš and Jaromír 99. It was shot with actors first and drawn over afterwards. What it is about is the expulsion of the Sudeten Germans in 1945, and how forty years later it was still a subject nobody would discuss.
