South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut

Trey Parker directed this alone and wrote it with Matt Stone and Pam Brady. What separates it from the series is not the volume of swearing but the form: it is a properly built Broadway book musical. The opening number introduces the town on exactly the template of a Disney era want song, and La Resistance stacks every melody heard so far into one ensemble piece, standing in for One Day More from Les Miserables. Parker wrote the songs with Marc Shaiman, who also handled the score. The awards go like this. Blame Canada was nominated for best original song at the 72nd Academy Awards and lost to You’ll Be in My Heart from Tarzan, with Robin Williams performing it at the ceremony. The film took two prizes that season: best animated film from the New York Film Critics Circle, and best music score from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, the latter to Parker and Shaiman. Guinness listed it in its 2001 book for most swearing in an animated movie, counting 399. A good fit if you want the profanity set inside a real musical structure and the censorship fight made the actual plot. Not for anyone unwilling to sit through Satan and Saddam Hussein conducting a relationship between the songs.
