What Alone Is About
Maria is a student in Essen. The city is grey and impersonal; she has one-night encounters and then throws the other person out roughly the next day. Then she meets Jan, and Jan falls in love with her on the first day. The relationship begins, but what Maria carries is neither anger nor indifference. Thomas Durchschlag's German film is about borderline personality disorder. That is a personality disorder, not a psychosis; and the film makes no diagnosis, it shows what is lived. Lavinia Wilson plays Maria. The telling neither offers a lover who rescues her nor makes the illness romantic; it also shows that Jan's loyalty stops being enough at a certain point.
