Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds

One of the biggest films in Korean history, and the numbers back it up. Released on 20 December 2017, it had sold 13,542,327 admissions and passed $101.6m by 22 January 2018, putting it third on the country's all-time list. The source is a webtoon of the same name. The production decision was unusual too. This film and its sequel, Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days, were shot at the same time in a single production block, with the second part released on 1 August 2018. What you are watching is effectively the first half of one film split in two. The story follows a firefighter who dies on duty and must pass seven separate trials across forty-nine days in the afterlife, covering lying, indolence, injustice, betrayal, violence, murder and filial duty, escorted by three guardians. Ha Jung-woo, Cha Tae-hyun, Ju Ji-hoon and Kim Hyang-gi lead. Who it is for: viewers who want a heavily digital tour of the afterlife wrapped around an unashamedly tear-seeking family story. Who it is not for: anyone allergic to emotional pressure. The final act never touches the brakes.
