Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days

The second film of a Korean afterlife narrative. In the first film we followed one soul through seven trials. Here three guides defend a new soul, an old man, and the courts open for him in the same order. There is also a second line. The guides were themselves people who lived a thousand years ago and do not remember their own past. That past opens in this film: a battle in the snow, a commander and two soldiers. The third line, on earth, is comic: a household god protects an old man who is due to die and his grandson, and negotiates with the officials of the other world. The two films were shot back to back, so this is less a sequel than the second half of one production. The source is Joo Ho-min's webcomic. Ha Jung-woo, Ju Ji-hoon, Kim Hyang-gi and Ma Dong-seok as the household god are in the cast. Kim Yong-hwa directed. Both films are among the most watched at the Korean box office. A fitting choice for anyone who likes fantasy worlds and family melodrama together. Before you watch, know this: the film does not make sense without the first one and its emotional register is heavy.
