What Always at The Carlyle Is About
Matthew Miele's documentary tells the story of the Carlyle, on Madison Avenue in New York, through the people who work there and the people who keep coming back. Doormen, housekeepers and bartenders sit alongside George Clooney, Anjelica Huston, Wes Anderson, Sofia Coppola, Naomi Campbell and Jeff Goldblum, each holding a different end of the same anecdotes. Miele had already filmed Bergdorf Goodman by much the same method, and here too he shows an institution's mythology together with the labour that keeps it standing. That is also the film's limit: it collects the hotel's own account of itself fondly rather than standing back from it. The staff's discretion is as much a part of the story as the famous memories.
