What American Nightmare: Becoming Cody Rhodes Is About
Matt Braine's 2023 documentary follows the wrestler Cody Rhodes leaving the major company, building his own career on the independent scene, and then returning. At its centre is the title his father Dusty Rhodes never won. What makes it interesting is that it does not hide that wrestling is scripted, and that the real matter is the distance between a stage identity and a person. The passages Rhodes narrates himself are honest; he says plainly what it cost to stand in his father's shadow. Its limit is being made by the company, with the critical side of the years away softened. Who it's for: viewers who follow professional wrestling and like sports documentaries. Who it's not for: anyone with no interest in wrestling, or wanting a critical portrait.
