What American Pimp Is About
The documentary sits street pimps from different American cities in front of a camera and lets them talk: how they got into it, why the clothes matter so much, how they bring a woman into their group, how they take one from somebody else, the unwritten rules among them. What comes out of their own mouths is clear enough; for them the subject is money. Allen and Albert Hughes directed it together. The telling rests entirely on the pimps' own account, and that drew steady objection: reviewers wrote that the women are given very little room, that nothing said is ever challenged, and that race, misogyny and violence are left at the edges. The documentary shows a way of life from the inside; the voices of the people paying for that life stay largely outside the frame.
