What Anarchist from Colony Is About
After the Great Kanto earthquake of 1923, false rumours spread in Japan that Koreans were poisoning wells, and thousands of Koreans were killed by mobs. Park Yeol, a Korean anarchist, was living in Tokyo at the time; seeing that the government wanted a scapegoat to cover the massacre, he stepped forward and accepted the charge. Beside him was Fumiko Kaneko, his Japanese comrade and partner, and the two were tried together. Lee Joon-ik's 2017 film builds it as a courtroom story: two young people turning their own trial into a platform. It works from real people and from the record; both the massacre and the trial are historically documented. Lee Je-hoon plays Park Yeol.
