Anatomy of a Marriage: My Days with Françoise

At the centre of the film is Françoise. The account is given in her words. The woman remembers the first meeting. Then she tells of the years of the marriage. The division of labour at home and the daily load come to the front. She judges her husband’s behaviour from where she stands. She also tells of the places where nothing was said. By her account the one in the right is herself. This story has a companion. The other film gives the events through the husband’s eyes. The two films show the same events differently. The same scene takes on another meaning in each. The viewer is left between the two accounts. Marie-José Nat and Jacques Charrier take the leads, with Macha Méril also in the cast, in André Cayatte’s German, French and Italian coproduction of 1964.
