André Hazes: She Believes in Me

The documentary draws a portrait of the Dutch singer André Hazes. The director followed him closely for ten months. From small halls to the large concerts in Benidorm and Rotterdam, the camera is with him everywhere. The film also shows the stage fright behind the success, and his troubles with health and with relationships. The account stands somewhere between admiration and distance and does not try to prettify its subject. The difference between the man on stage and the man off it is the point the film keeps returning to. Members of his family appear as well. The documentary drew great interest in the year it was shown and won the Joris Ivens award at IDFA. John Appel’s eighty six minute documentary, a joint Dutch and Spanish production, was completed in 2000.
