Animal Treasure Island

A boy called Jim comes upon a treasure map by chance. He leaves the harbour in an odd boat of his own making, with Glan the rat and a baby along with him. Pirates are after him at sea soon enough and the adventure begins. Directed by Hiroshi Ikeda, the film was adapted from Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island, but most of the characters are animals. It came out on the twentieth anniversary of Toei Animation. Hayao Miyazaki's hand is in the story; the young Miyazaki contributed to it and also worked as a key animator. The telling is fast, funny and constantly in motion. It comes from the pre-Ghibli period of Japanese animation and carries that period's energy.
