Anita

Leung Lok-Man's 2021 Hong Kong film tells the life of the singer and actor Anita Mui. It begins with her performing as a child and follows her move to the centre of Hong Kong pop after she wins a contest. The narrative moves between career and private life. Her relationship with her sister, the way she built her stage persona and the illness of her last years are covered, and the close is given to her final concert. Louise Wong takes the lead in her first film. The production gives wide space to period design and to restaging the songs. The film was also criticised for softening the difficult parts of the life and constructing an official portrait. Who it's for: those who like Hong Kong pop history and musical biography. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a critical biography; the film treats its subject largely within a protective frame.
