What Anna Karenina Is About
Aleksandr Zarkhi's 1967 Soviet adaptation brings Tolstoy's novel to the screen. Anna, the wife of the official Karenin, is travelling to Moscow to see her brother when she meets the cavalry officer Vronsky, and an attraction opens between them at once. But in Petersburg society it is the woman who pays for a relationship like that: the same behaviour leaves a man's standing untouched and throws a woman out. Tatyana Samoylova plays Anna, with Vasili Lanovoy as Vronsky. It is one of the grand period productions of the Soviet era, its costumes and settings built to carry the social layer of the novel.
