What Height Is About
A team of steel erectors arrives at the construction of an ironworks to put up the blast furnace by a new method. Their foreman knows his work but bows to nobody; the young woman who joins the crew is the same, and the two start holding out both on the job and against each other. The film gives labour not as a display of heroism but as an ordinary day spent high up, in the cold and in danger, and the love between them with the same plainness. In Soviet cinema of 1957 that manner was new. Nikolai Rybnikov and Inna Makarova appear in Aleksandr Zarkhi’s ninety four minute film; it was completed in 1957.
