What Annaluise & Anton Is About
Luise, whom everyone calls Pünktchen, is the daughter of a wealthy surgeon and grows up in a large house with a mother permanently travelling and never available to her. Anton is the son of a sick mother with no money, and works nights to keep the household going. The two of them are best friends, and Pünktchen starts singing in the street to help him. It all comes apart when Anton cannot resist stealing a lighter and Pünktchen's secret life reaches her parents. Caroline Link's 1999 film comes from Erich Kästner's children's novel of 1931. It is about two children looking after each other, and its criticism is aimed squarely at the adults: what both families are short of is not money but attention.
