What Beyond Silence Is About

Lara is the hearing child of deaf parents. Since she was small she has translated the world for them: the meeting at the bank, the conversation with a teacher, the argument with a neighbour. When a clarinet from her aunt draws her into music she arrives somewhere difficult, because the thing she loves is the one thing she cannot share with her family. Her father takes it as a desertion. The deaf parents are played by actors who are themselves deaf, which is where the signing scenes get their force. Nominated for the foreign film Oscar.
