A Jewish family flees Germany in 1938 and ends up on a farm in Kenya. The father was a lawyer and is now learning agriculture, the mother cannot adapt because she is grieving a comfortable life, and the daughter changes fastest of all, learning Swahili and forming a bond with Owuor, the farm cook, that becomes the steadiest relationship in the film. Caroline Link adapted Stefanie Zweig's novel about her own childhood. What makes it interesting is that exile is not framed as rescue but as a second loss: the family gains safety and mislays who it was. It won the Oscar for best foreign language film.
