What Antarctica Is About
In 1958 a Japanese Antarctic expedition has to withdraw because of the weather, and fifteen Sakhalin huskies are left chained at the station. The film follows both what the scientists Ushioda and Ochi have to live with afterwards and the months the dogs spend on the ice; the survival of Taro and Jiro is still a known story in Japan. Koreyoshi Kurahara directed, with a score by Vangelis. It took more than eleven billion yen and held the Japanese box office record for fourteen years, until Princess Mononoke.
