What Thirst for Love Is About
Etsuko, whose husband died soon after their marriage, stays on in her wealthy father-in-law’s house and sinks there into a loneliness she tells no one about. The relationship that forms between her and the older man is less a choice than a submission; the real matter is the obsession Etsuko carries for Saburō, the household’s gardener, which steadily eats away at her. The account asks not about desire but about in whose hands desire becomes power, and shows how a woman is cornered inside a closed house. Koreyoshi Kurahara’s ninety nine minute Japanese film was adapted from Yukio Mishima’s 1950 novel. Ruriko Asaoka plays Etsuko and Tetsuo Ishidate plays Saburō; it opened on 18 February 1967.
