In Bihar, kidnapping has become an industry. Ajay Shastri is a young man who cannot get on with his father; the father is an uncompromisingly honest Gandhian social worker who does not approve of his son's path. Ajay pays a bribe to get a job, is cheated, and is left with nothing. In anger he joins Tabrez's men. He rises quickly, and the first great obstacle in front of him turns out to be his father. Prakash Jha's film is about the kidnap-for-ransom economy in Bihar and how it is bound up with politics; it is one of a run of films in which the director keeps returning to that region and that subject. Ajay Devgn plays the son and Nana Patekar the gang boss, and Patekar's performance became the most talked-about thing in the film. Two hours and fifty-three minutes. The story does not justify the crime but does not look away from its cause either.
