What Apocalypse '45 Is About
The documentary tells the last months of the Pacific war through colour footage shot at the time by the American military, most of which had never been shown: Iwo Jima, Okinawa, the bombing of Japanese cities, then Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The material has been restored and comes out of the archive in this form for the first time. There is no narrator. In place of one there are the voices of twenty-four men who were there. Erik Nelson's 2020 film gives that testimony without tidying it: some of them hold that what was done was necessary, some still cannot square it decades later. The result is neither a victory narrative nor an indictment, but a hard record of what the end of a war looked like.
