What Armstrong Is About

The documentary runs Neil Armstrong's life end to end: the childhood in Ohio, the combat flying in Korea, the test pilot years, the Gemini missions, Apollo 11 and the landing. It does not skip what came after either: the man who withdrew once he was the most recognised person alive, who stopped talking and stopped giving interviews. David Fairhead combines archive material with the family's own records, including letters and recordings in Armstrong's voice. Harrison Ford narrates. It stays largely out of the heroic register and draws a portrait of a quiet, closed man instead. The question at the centre of it is why the first person to walk on the Moon never wanted to discuss it.
