What Asignatura pendiente Is About
José and Elena, who loved each other in their youth, meet again years later; both are married now and have children. What starts up between them is less a love story than an attempt to settle the account of what they could not have when they were young; in those years an order suppressed desire and politics alike, and now that order is coming apart. As the country changes with Franco’s death, the thing between the two of them changes as well, and once the secrecy is gone the question of what remains comes up. José Luis Garci’s hundred and nine minute Spanish film is his first feature and stands at the head of the films about the disillusion of the transition. José Sacristán plays José and Fiorella Faltoyano plays Elena. It was completed in 1977 and was the most watched Spanish film of that year.
