The Grandfather

Count Albrit comes back to Spain from Peru after many years. The fortune is gone, his son is dead, and what is left are two granddaughters, Nell and Dolly. A letter left by the son says his wife was unfaithful. So one of the girls is of Albrit's blood and the other is not. The old man decides to find out which; for him lineage is honour itself. He watches them separately, talks to them, tests them. In the end what he learns does not match what he expected, and he has to choose which of the two weighs more. José Luis Garci directs; two hours and thirty-one minutes, with Fernando Fernán Gómez as Albrit, adapted from Benito Pérez Galdós's novel. It was nominated for the foreign language film Oscar in 1999.
