What Las verdes praderas Is About
José is an executive with a happy marriage. He has children, a flat in Madrid and a house outside the city. It is Friday, and the weekend looks set to go the usual way: a match with friends, a drive to the mountain house, a family visit. But José feels nothing about any of it. He can no longer tell the difference between rest and obligation. At the end of the film it is his wife who makes the unexpected decision. The film shows middle class comfort not as a gain but as a weight. The weekend itself turning into a shift of work is the real subject. Alfredo Landa and María Casanova appear in José Luis Garci’s eighty nine minute Spanish film, completed in 1979.
