What My Brother-in-Law Is About
A 1970s Turkish comedy directed by Zeki Alasya, who also stars alongside Metin Akpinar. Selim, a minibus driver, moves into a new neighbourhood and before long falls for Zeynep, who lives there. She accepts his proposal on one condition: he has to win over her older brother first. The brother, Halim, is the local tough, so the job turns out to be rather more than asking permission. The humour comes largely from the way Alasya and Akpinar's characters complete each other and from the rules the neighbourhood keeps for itself, where being a hard man is treated less as something to fear than as a performance under constant test.
