What Petrol Kings Is About
Two friends forced to sell their house for lack of money strike oil in their own garden at the last moment. They call off the sale, become rich overnight, and take on the black marketeer and the loan shark of their neighbourhood. Zeki Alasya directed this 1978 comedy and plays one half of the duo opposite Metin Akpinar, with Ali Sen and Perran Kutman in support. The familiar shape of seventies Turkish comedy is all here: the little man's sudden fortune, neighbourhood solidarity, and a reckoning with whoever holds the power. Oil in a back garden reads as a wish written against the decade's scarcity.
