Assassins

Ryan White's documentary tells the story of the killing of Kim Jong-nam, half-brother of Kim Jong-un, at Kuala Lumpur airport in 2017, and of the trial of the two young women charged afterwards. Siti Aisyah from Indonesia and Doan Thi Huong from Vietnam said they believed they were filming a prank for an entertainment show; the substance they smeared on the victim's face was a nerve agent. The documentary's strength lies in the records showing how the two were prepared over months: rehearsal videos, social media accounts, payment trails. The account moves toward the women having been pawns, and the court process largely bore that defence out. The film's limit is that evidence about the North Korean side is, by its nature, indirect. Who it's for: viewers who follow true crime documentaries and are interested in North Korea and regional politics. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a conclusive answer, or unwilling to watch footage of the killing.
