What Au revoir l'été Is About
Having failed her university entrance exam, Sakuko is invited by her aunt Mikie to spend the summer in a seaside town. She gets to know the people there, among them Takashi, the shy relative of a childhood friend, who is living as a refugee from Fukushima. Koji Fukada builds the film out of small holiday frictions and things left unsaid rather than events, and the French title gives away the debt to Rohmer’s summer pictures. The Japanese title means something like Sakuko at the edge, which describes the posture of the whole film, since she stands at the margin of everything happening around her. It won the Golden Montgolfiere at Nantes in 2013.
