What Love Life Is About
Taeko lives quietly with her husband Jiro and her son Keita. Then the boy dies in an accident at home, and at the funeral his father Park, who disappeared years ago, turns up: deaf, homeless, with nothing. Summaries do not say what the accident was, and yet the entire weight of the film sits there. Taeko tries to carry her grief and her guilt by taking care of Park, which puts her new marriage under strain. Koji Fukada moves through it without declaring anyone right or wrong. The film takes its title and its spirit from Akiko Yano's song.
