What The Real Thing Is About

Kazumichi is an office worker dying of boredom who is carrying on two vague relationships with women at work at the same time. He meets Ukiyo in a convenience store and his life never returns to its previous shape; she keeps landing him in trouble, he keeps going after her, and he loses a little more each time. Koji Fukada adapted the story from Mochiru Hoshisato’s manga, first as a ten part series for Nagoya television and then cut down into a single film of over four hours. It was included in the 2020 Cannes selection.
