Haikyu!! the Movie: The End and the Beginning

Hinata wants to play volleyball in junior high but the school has no team. He trains on his own and finally gets to play a match. In his first official game he faces Kitagawa Daiichi and their setter Kageyama. Hinata is crushed. When he starts high school he joins Karasuno; the school's team, once strong, is now weak. Walking into the hall he finds Kageyama there. The two are on the same team and cannot stand each other. Training begins and they have to find a way to work together. Susumu Mitsunaka directs. Ayumu Murase voices Hinata and Kaito Ishikawa voices Kageyama. The source is Haruichi Furudate's comic series. The film is a compilation of the early episodes of the television series; new scenes were added but the story comes from the series. It is the first of a two part compilation. The matter it treats is height; Hinata is short and in volleyball that is shown as a decisive disadvantage. The matches are built on speed and the cutting follows the movement of the ball. The narrative does not build rivalry as enmity; the two have to work together rather than beat each other. Its limit is form; being a compilation the rhythm is compressed and it repeats for anyone who watched the series. Another limit is independence; the narrative does not complete a story on its own. Who it is for: viewers who like sports animation and anyone wanting a quick way into the series. Who it is not for: the compilation is compressed, the characters many, and the story left unfinished.
