What Axé: Music of a People Is About
The documentary is about Axé, which was born in Bahia and is counted today among the most widespread musical movements in the world. The rhythm carries within it a large part of the musical and cultural mixture of the region; traditions of African origin, the carnival and local popular music all meet in the same place. The film follows the birth of the movement through interviews and archive footage. Among those who speak are the people who founded the movement and made it grow. The account takes the music not as entertainment but as the way a community expresses itself. The film’s attention goes as much to whose hands the movement grew in as to how it appeared. Chico Kertesz’s hundred and five minute Brazilian documentary was completed in 2017.
