What Babes on Broadway Is About
The third of the MGM pictures in which Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland play kids who put on their own show. Penny Morris and Tommy Williams are desperate to perform and nobody will give them a chance, so they set about staging their own show to raise money for children. Busby Berkeley directed, with Vincente Minnelli handling Garland's big solo numbers. The show that closes the film is a minstrel sequence performed in blackface, in line with the American stage convention of the period, and that finale is now the most argued-over thing in it. Richard Quine, later a director himself, is in the cast.
