They Made Me a Criminal

Johnnie Bradfield is a boxing champion. One night, with drink in him, a man dies in his room. Johnnie remembers nothing and believes he did it. He runs. Under another name he ends up at a ranch in Arizona, where a group of boys from New York are trying to build themselves a new life. The ranch is about to go under. If Johnnie fights, there is money in it, but fighting means being seen, and a detective is on his trail. Busby Berkeley directs the American film; ninety-two minutes, with John Garfield as Johnnie and Claude Rains as the detective, and Ann Sheridan and the Dead End Kids in the cast. Berkeley was known for musical numbers; this is one of his non-musical pictures. It is a remake of The Life of Jimmy Dolan from 1933.
