What Back Issues: The Hustler Magazine Story Is About
The documentary traces the path of Hustler, the magazine Larry Flynt started under the name of a nightclub, from its founding to the internet era. Alongside its publisher, editors, cartoonists, models, lawyers and art directors speak; what they describe covers the magazine’s years in courtrooms, the arguments over censorship and the deliberately provocative register it built for itself. The shooting Flynt survived in 1978, after which he used a wheelchair for the rest of his life, and the death of his wife Althea Flynt are both part of the account. There is a personal side to Michael Lee Nirenberg’s eighty nine minute American documentary as well: the director’s father was one of the magazine’s art directors in its early years. It was completed in 2014.
