What Back Street Is About
Ambitious and repeatedly blocked, Rae Smith meets Paul Saxon, a marine passing through Nebraska on his way home from the Second World War; the spark between them is obvious, but circumstances intervene and he leaves town without her. She learns later that he is married. She moves to New York, becomes a considerable success as a fashion designer, runs into Paul again, moves to Rome to escape and meets him there once more, and when his wife refuses a divorce the affair settles into a hidden life. Years pass, Paul’s young son finds out about her, and the back street world Rae built begins to collapse.
