What The Story of Esther Costello Is About
Esther is eighteen and has been deaf and blind since the accident that killed her mother. Margaret Landi, a wealthy woman who came from the same village in Ireland, is persuaded to help have the girl educated and takes her back to America. There Esther learns to communicate, and Margaret comes to love her like a daughter. But as the girl’s name spreads and she becomes the instrument of a fundraising campaign, other people gather around her, Margaret’s former husband among them. The film was argued over in its own day, and found uncomfortable, because it asks at what point charity turns into exploitation. Joan Crawford and Heather Sears appear in David Miller’s hundred and three minute film, completed in 1957.
