What Flying Tigers Is About
Jim Gordon commands the Flying Tigers, the American volunteer pilots who fought the Japanese in China before the United States entered the war. They are always outnumbered and their aircraft are always older than the enemy's. Things get complicated when an old friend joins the unit: a fine flyer with no use for discipline, and rather too interested in the bounty paid per plane shot down. A nurse comes between them as well. David Miller shot the film in 1942 while the war was still running, and it stands near the front of John Wayne's war pictures. It does not hide its propaganda purpose, but the aerial sequences push the standards of their day.
