Our Very Own

In the middle of a quarrel with her sister Joan, Gail learns that she was adopted. The news shakes her and she sets out after her own identity; with the reluctant support of her adoptive parents and her little sister Penny she begins to look for her birth mother. The film does not turn the search into a matter of blame; each of the two mothers has her own reasons and the girl is caught between them. The account works with the moulds of the American family drama of the fifties, but does not tie its ending to an easy reconciliation. The knowing itself stands as the thing that cannot be undone. Ann Blyth and Farley Granger appear in David Miller’s ninety three minute American film, completed in 1950.
