Backyard

Blanca Bravo is a police officer newly posted to Ciudad Juárez. Women have been murdered in the city for years; most of them are young women who came from the countryside to work in the border factories called maquiladoras. Blanca looks at the files and sees that none of them has really been investigated. The names her trail leads to belong to the city's leading men. Nobody helps her and everybody tries to make her drop it. The events are real. From the start of the nineties hundreds of women were killed in Ciudad Juárez; how many is still disputed today and most of the cases were never solved. Sabina Berman wrote the screenplay and Carlos Carrera directed. The film does not point to a single culprit and does that deliberately; what it describes is not a killer but a city's arrangement that let this happen. Two hours and two minutes.
