What Balseros Is About
In the summer of 1994 a television crew spoke with seven Cubans preparing to set out for America on rafts they had built themselves, and filmed them putting to sea. Six were picked up at sea by the Coast Guard; when, after months at Guantanamo, they were allowed into the United States, the crew went with them from city to city. Seven years later the same crew found all of them again: some had set up a business, some had brought their families over, some had put nothing right. The film tells migration not as heroism or deliverance but as being caught between two worlds. The hundred and twenty minute Spanish documentary by Carlos Bosch and Josep Maria Domènech was completed in 2002.
