What (Be)Longing Is About
About fifty people live in Uz, a hamlet in the northern mountains of Portugal; four generations in the same place, around the same work. The documentary follows a year by the calendar of the fields and the herd: sowing, harvest, slaughter, a wedding and winter. Most of the young have gone abroad and those who stayed chose to stay; the film neither romanticises this nor asks for pity, but shows the day’s work as it is. Solidarity here is not a word but the condition of survival, and what is left over is left to fate. João Pedro Plácido’s seventy eight minute Portuguese documentary was made with the people of the village themselves; it was completed in 2015.
