What Beach of the War Gods Is About

In the last years of the Ming dynasty, Japanese pirates are raiding the villages of the Chinese coast. A wandering swordsman who comes to one town breaks up one of the raiding parties single-handed and, at the people’s insistence, stays and takes on its defence. He gathers a few skilled fighters, teaches the townsfolk to use weapons and to stand together, and prepares traps. When the pirates attack with everything they have, the fighting comes down to the beach and nobody is left as they were. The hundred minute Taiwanese film is one of those Jimmy Wang Yu both directed and starred in; it was completed in 1973.
