What Sword of the Stranger Is About
A boy living alone in feudal Japan runs from a group of Chinese swordsmen who are looking for him. A nameless swordsman who has sworn not to draw his blade attaches himself to him. The film keeps its story simple and gives all its weight to the choreography. The fights are drawn without slow motion or exaggeration; the strikes are short, the distances real, and the final encounter in the snow is nearly silent. It is Masahiro Ando's first film as director, made at Studio Bones and drawn by hand. A real warning: the film is not shy about blood and keeps a child in danger throughout. Even if you like action anime, it is not for watching with young viewers.
